2013 Charger Daytona Specs
Dodge's first Charger Daytona was one of the great oddball automobiles. Meant for NASCAR's fastest tracks - hence the name - it featured a super tall rear wing and extended aero nose. Dodge resurrected the name from 2006-2009 on the then-current Charger and for 2013 it returns as the Charger Daytona R/T or that name we love, R/T Road & Track.
Hemi at Heart
It couldn't be a Charger Daytona without a Hemi V-8, still at 5.7 liters and with 370 bhp and 395 lb-ft of torque. Figure on a 0-60 time around 6 seconds with the 5-speed automatic and its die cast zinc paddle shifters with a sport mode. Out back is a 3.06 rear axle ratio. Dodge claims 19 mpg city/highway combined thanks in part to the Fuel Saver Technology that can back the Hemi off to four cylinders at cruise.
For a quick look back, a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona had a 7.0-liter Hemi V-8 with 425 bhp, got to 60 in 5.6 seconds with a 3.54 rear end and had an average fuel economy of, get this, 8.6 mpg. Hey, premium gas back then was around 40 cents per gallon. Times change.
Limited Edition
Dodge will only build 2500 Charger Daytonas, each with a dash plaque bearing that car's build number. The R/T version will start at $32,990, with the R/T Road & Track basing at $36,495. Here's what you'll get:
There's a choice of four colors, Daytona Blue, Bright White, Billet Silver and Pitch Black. Up front are the classic "R/T" badge and the standard crosshair grill, now in satin black. Atop the hood is a vinyl graphic in the indentations, while up top is a roof wrap. You'll find the word "DAYTONA" stretched along the rear fender tops and an R/T rear spoiler. Daytonas ride on unique 20-in. polished aluminum wheels.
There are heated and ventilated front seats with Daytona Blue stitching, upholstered in cloth for the R/T, leather and suede in the Road & Track edition. "Daytona" is embroidered in blue in the rear seatbacks. The dark brushed aluminum interior trim is unique to Daytonas, which also get a bright pedal kit and a Beats Audio System with 552 watts and 10 speakers.
Dodge will introduce the Charger Daytona at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show and sales begin early in 2013. The car's name makes you wonder what the Charger would hit for a top speed at (where else?) Daytona. That would be, of course, a bit pointless as Dodge is out of NASCAR for 2013, an irony as this year Brad Keselowski and Roger Penske brought the Dodge Charger its first NASCAR championship since Richard Petty won in 1975.
